College of General Studies Natural Science Programme (Summer)
The Programme
Great Britain -and particularly London- has played a key role in the lives of scientists, from Newton to Darwin, who developed many of the major concepts that allow us to understand our natural world. The Prime Meridian, the electron, the nuclear model of the atom, gravity, evolution, and modern physical geology represent just a few of the significant contributions made by English scientists to our understanding of the natural world. The CGS Natural Sciences Programme is designed to use the museums and historic sites in and around London as a complement to the classroom. The two natural science courses will enhance student understanding of science by providing a hands-on historical approach to the acquisition of knowledge in the sciences. Studying the history and the practice of a scientific discipline on location and in context will enhance both learning and appreciation of the scientific theories.
The Boston University College of General Studies Natural Science Summer Programme is designed to support the general education philosophy of the CGS core curriculum and allow students increased flexibility in their schedules, utilising the considerable resources in and around
London. Enrolling in the CGS Natural Science Summer programme gives students the option to take additional elective courses in the spring of their freshman year and in the fall of their sophomore year.
Summer 2010 dates: Monday 28 June - Saturday 7 August
Academics
The two courses in this track will replace the spring freshman natural science requirement (NS 102) and the fall sophomore natural science requirement (NS 201). Each course carries four Boston University credits. Students participating in the BU CGS Natural Science Summer Programme are enrolled in the following courses:
| Preregistered for | |
|---|---|
| CGS NS 299 | The Historical Development of Scientific Thought: The Physical World, Humans and the Measurement of Time (4cr) |
| CGS NS 300 | The Historical Foundation of the Physical Sciences: Taxonomy and Evolution (4cr) |
Student Experience
“My participation in this program was the best academic decision I have ever made. Professor Busher is a phenomenal teacher who really care about his students and has taught me a lot about science and how it impacts everyday life.” Virginia Wilking, Summer 2008
